Maria Grasmick’s political cartoons examine power as it is exercised, performed, contested, and remembered. Drawing on American history, classical allegory, caricature, and contemporary political events, her work considers the personalities and institutions through which public life is shaped.
Presidents, cabinet officials, diplomats, journalists, legal figures, and other participants in public affairs recur throughout the work. Yet the subject is rarely portraiture alone. Individual figures become part of larger compositions concerned with authority, political language, institutional conflict, public perception, and the distance that can emerge between appearance and intent.
Grasmick approaches the political cartoon as both commentary and historical record. A work may originate in the immediacy of a speech, negotiation, controversy, election, or diplomatic event, while its composition draws upon older visual traditions and historical parallels. This combination allows the work to remain connected to a precise moment while inviting interpretation beyond the original news cycle.
Her compositions are constructed through hand-drawn linework, recognizable caricature, symbolic detail, dialogue, and carefully controlled visual hierarchy. Historical and literary references frequently appear within the work, creating a second level of meaning for viewers familiar with the events, ideas, and traditions being invoked.
Since 2016, Grasmick has developed an extensive body of political and editorial work documenting American public life and international affairs. Taken together, the cartoons form an evolving visual chronicle of political leadership, institutional power, media narrative, law, diplomacy, and the cultural forces surrounding them.
The work occupies a deliberate position between editorial illustration and collectible political art: immediate enough to engage the event at hand, yet composed with the intention of preserving the atmosphere, tensions, personalities, and arguments of its time.
