The Story Behind Lake America

On August 27, 2026, President Trump signed an executive order directing U.S. federal agencies to use Lake America as the American federal name for Lake Ontario.

The order turned an international disagreement over a shared body of water into something remarkably tangible: a name on a map.

Canada, however, was under no obligation to adopt the American designation.

That disagreement coincided with a much broader period of tension between Washington and Ottawa involving tariffs, trade, sovereignty and the future of the economic relationship between the neighboring countries.

There was also another, smaller dispute running through the trade discussions: French-language requirements in Canada.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer clarified that Canada’s French-language requirements were not a U.S. “red line” in negotiations. Dominic LeBlanc publicly welcomed that clarification.

The juxtaposition provided the inspiration for this cartoon.

If French isn’t the problem, how should the newly designated Lake America be translated?

Apparently, it shouldn’t.

English: Lake America.

French: Lake America.

The deliberately bureaucratic translation turns a complicated diplomatic disagreement into two identical lines on a presidential document.

The three figures represent three different positions within the moment.

Trump occupies the foreground, presenting the order with the ceremonial confidence of a president announcing an accomplished fact.

Carney stands behind him representing a Canadian government that continues to recognize the lake as Lake Ontario.

LeBlanc brings another element into the scene. As the Canadian minister closely involved with U.S. trade relations, his presence connects the naming dispute with the simultaneous negotiations between Washington and Ottawa.

Their French reactions provide the final layer of the cartoon without requiring a lengthy political explanation inside the artwork itself.
