Why the James Comey Seashell Case Inspired This Cartoon

Former FBI Director James Comey seashell case cartoon shows when he asked a federal judge on July 27, 2026, to dismiss the criminal case arising from his “86 47” Instagram post. His attorneys argue that the seashell arrangement was protected political expression.. not a “true threat” against President Donald Trump.

Yet something curious happened as the story entered another day of national coverage. Headline after headline transformed a threat against the president into a charmingly peculiar “seashell case.”

That contrast inspired my latest hand-drawn political cartoon, The Seashell Defense.

“The court will now hear what the seashells have to say.”

What Did James Comey Post?

In May 2025, Comey published a photograph of seashells arranged to form “86 47,” accompanied by the words, “Cool shell formation on my beach walk.”

Trump is the 47th president. The meaning of “86” lies at the center of the controversy. It can mean to remove, eject or refuse service.. but it has also been interpreted as slang for killing someone.

Comey deleted the post and denied intending violence.

According to the Justice Department’s announcement, prosecutors allege that a reasonable recipient familiar with the circumstances would interpret the post as a serious expression of intent to harm the president. Comey’s attorneys now argue that the government cannot meet the constitutional standard required to punish political speech. The Associated Press reported on his dismissal request on July 27.

Comey remains legally presumed innocent unless proven guilty. But we know.

When the Seashells Become the Story

My cartoon is not intended to decide the constitutional question in place of the court. It examines how the controversy is being presented to the public.

When a headline calls this merely a “seashell case,” the language changes its emotional weight. Seashells suggest vacations, collections and harmless beach decorations. A potential threat against a sitting president suggests something entirely different.

The central joke is therefore not simply that shells have entered a courtroom. It is that the visual novelty can become more memorable than the disputed message they formed.

Trump presents “Exhibit 86–47,” but the courtroom appears fascinated by the beach.

The Hidden Snake and Clam

A snake in the composition hides inside a clam. This is one of the cartoon’s most important concealed details.

The clam represents the harmless surface story: an innocent object gathered from the shore. The snake represents the possibility of calculation, concealment and danger underneath that presentation.

The symbolism does not announce a verdict. It asks viewers to look past the packaging.

Comey was not an ordinary social-media user unfamiliar with the power of coded communication. He formerly led the FBI and has been one of Trump’s most consequential institutional opponents. That history makes the claimed innocence of the arrangement part of the political argument.

What President Trump Has Faced

The Trump–Comey conflict reaches back to the FBI’s investigation of possible connections between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia, Comey’s dismissal as FBI director in 2017 and years of accusations between the two men.

For Trump and his supporters, Comey represents more than one former official. He represents an intelligence and law-enforcement establishment they believe used its authority against an elected president.

That history is why four characters arranged on a beach cannot be separated entirely from their political setting. The court must decide the law. In the James Comey Seashell Case. The cartoon asks whether the public is being encouraged to examine the alleged message or merely admire the shells.
