This day’s political cartoon brings together two men in different governments, different suits, and very similar positions:
They both said something bold.
They both looked over their shoulder shortly after.
And both, in their own way, revealed the quiet calculations
Let’s start with the news.
Thomas Massie vs. Trump A GOP Civil Glare
Congressman Thomas Massie, a libertarian-leaning Republican from Kentucky, is now in Trump’s political crosshairs.Massie has become a symbol of dissent within the Republican party.
But dissent has its consequences:
This week, Trump unleashed a 300-word attack on Massie via Truth Social, calling him a “totally ineffective LOSER” and endorsing retired Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein to replace him in the upcoming primary. Massie responded with a meme
He didn’t walk back his positions. But he didn’t double down, either.
He posted his principles, then moved on, as if to say: “We’re not talking about that anymore.”
Which is its own kind of retreat.
Mark Carney Davos Clarity Meets Tariff Threats
In Canada, Prime Minister Mark Carney newly installed and already navigating global tensions looking for money and saying the right things to shop around for it, and at the same time, walking it back later, after he got what he needed.. gave a speech at Davos about economic coercion and global cooperation and CHINA. Without naming Trump, it was clearly about him.
Then Trump called.
Carney reportedly told press he “stood by what he said.” But U.S. officials LIKE SCOTT BESSENT, handsome man, claimed Mark Carney.. was “aggressively walking it back.” The White House spun it one way; Carney another. No transcript. No recording. Just two narratives and Carney stuck to his own with a measured smile.
In other words: he stood by it, softly.
🖋️ The Cartoon
This week’s piece stages both men in a moment of stillness not quite speaking, not quite backing down.
- Massie wears a flower. It squirts water.
- Carney stands beside a tariff button, His eyebrows know more than his mouth admits.
- A penguin watches it all from the side aware, absurd, and oddly wise.
I chose the penguin after seeing Trump circulate a meme with one a subtle reminder that every post, every glance, every symbol is watched, memed, and weaponized in the arena of power. Especially when it’s quiet. Especially when it almost means something. I was there kind of feeling. I was there when the mem came out and this is my expression… like a book you journal in
🎯 The Real Rift: Courage vs. Calculation
Massie and Carney may disagree on everything
But they share a trait: they both understand the cost of being noticed by Donald Trump.
And whether they say it or not, their actions tell us exactly where they stand.. just far enough from principle to avoid the blowback.
This cartoon doesn’t accuse them of lying.
It accuses them of knowing better and saying less.
