🎨 “Statue Denied” November 6, 2025
(Jay Clayton, President Trump, and the power of a single blue slip)
🔍 What This Work Means
This piece is about presidential authority vs senatorial obstruction gilded merit meeting bureaucratic vanity. President Trump, in a classical temple of American justice, unveils Jay Clayton: a statue not just of gold, but of constitutional right.
Yet in the background, one man Senator Chuck Schumer lifts a flimsy blue slip and blocks it all with a single word: “Denied.”
This is more than satire. It’s a portrait of how small customs become levers of control in a republic designed for balance, not sabotage. The blue slip is a non binding custom. This means senators are playing politics. All they have to do, is whoever has the nomination for US Attorneys needs to be approved by both senators from the lawyers state. Now, the flawless Jay Clayton, is there as INTERIM only, meaning only while Trump is in office. The President wants and has a right to appoint the best attorneys in charge, that he thinks is good for the people.
🕳️ The Rabbit Hole
I fell deep into the lore of “blue slips.” At first glance, it’s a simple courtesy: letting home-state senators weigh in on judicial nominees. But when you look closer, it becomes a shadow veto. Not in the Constitution. Not a law. Just a Senate tradition used to paralyze the president’s powers.
Jay Clayton clean record, SEC chair, ready to serve. But because of one senator’s politics, his nomination was left to gather dust.
And so I asked: what happens when a relic of the Senate outweighs the will of the people? This cartoon is my answer.
🚧 The Problem My Audience Faces
If you’re reading this, you know: we’re governed not by rules, but by manipulations of rules.
Our side wins elections, nominates leaders, works within the system and yet is blocked by procedures no one voted for, no one explained, and no one can undo. It is like the short story THE LOTTERY by Shirley Jackson. ” It is just tradition”! but pointless in use.
This cartoon captures that moment: when your vote is overridden by a slip of paper behind closed doors.
🤝 Our Bond Shared
You and I both understand that art is not entertainment .. it’s ammunition.
We feel the weight of a captured system. But we still believe in clarity, elegance, and truth. This work is for you: those who know that a single senator shouldn’t undo the people’s voice, and that tradition without integrity is tyranny in robes.
Together, we are preserving legacy. Not just of one man, but of what it means to serve.
🧠 A Window to My Creative Brain
I began with the image of Trump ” as a Roman figure” in his suit at his podium. The reference photo I used was in his speech about Jay Clayton. stately, solemn, bearing a gift of justice to the public square. Not shouting, not fighting .. presenting. Giving us something flawless…
Clayton became a golden statue noble, idealized, unblemished. And then I placed Schumer: small, seated, smug not powerful by presence, but by procedure.
The entire piece was composed like a Renaissance altar. Columns. Marble. Scale. It’s a courtroom, a temple, a stage .. and you, the viewer, are the jury.
If you see shadows of ancient Rome then I’ve done my job.
My political cartoon of Trump presenting a golden statue mirrors a Roman consecratio … the public recognition of virtue. Schumer denying it recalls damnatio memoriae, where statues were left unfinished, toppled, or hidden from view.
