Raised by a business immigration lawyer and a mother with a master’s degree in social work, Maria developed an early awareness of how law, public institutions, and individual circumstances shape people’s lives. Her father’s legal precision and her mother’s work within the prison system gave her an early perspective on justice, consequence, and compassion.
Her introduction to political cartooning began with her grandfather. Each summer, he gave her shoeboxes filled with Reagan-era political cartoons he had collected throughout the year. She was asked to analyze each one. Those cartoons became an early education in satire, caricature, symbolism, and the ability of a single image to capture a political moment, an influence that would later become central to her professional work.

Raised in Buffalo, New York, political cartoonist Maria Grasmick developed an early appreciation for the relationship between history, place, and American identity. The city’s industrial character, distinctive architecture, and working-class history helped shape the historical awareness that would later become central to her art.
Maria attended the same Buffalo elementary school once attended by F. Scott Fitzgerald, a connection that strengthened her interest in American literature, symbolism, and carefully constructed narrative. Growing up among buildings and neighborhoods shaped by earlier generations also contributed to her fascination with the ways history continues to influence politics, culture, and public memory.

Since beginning her professional work in 2016, Maria has created hundreds of political cartoons, editorial illustrations, character studies, and commissioned works. Alongside her independent political artwork, Maria has produced editorial illustration, character development, and commissioned artwork for clients. This professional experience has strengthened her ability to translate complex subjects into clear visual narratives while maintaining a distinctive artistic point of view.
Maria continues to study American political history, classical art, caricature, and symbolic storytelling.
